Summary of article by Alex Hutchinson ā€“ The Seven Pillars of Running Wisdom
Nov 06, 2024By Ciaran Deely
Really excellent article in Runners World from Alex Hutchinson regarding what’s he’s learned about running and the sport science and performance in of endurance events over his athletic and journalistic career called The Seven Pillars of Running Wisdom (see link below):
Quick summary below, really worth the read, and personally agree with the sentiments of the article. Sport science, quantitative data, supplementations, tracking devices are there to aid performance and/or create a discussion- not to replace common sense, a balance natural diet, exercise self regulation and a balance training programme with variety and a range of physiological stresses & stimuli. Take a read of the full article to see expansion of summary points below.
- Running is good for you “in moderation,” which is defined as “a lot more than you’re doing.”
- If it comes in a bottle, it’s probably not going to make you faster or healthier.
- The best technology for tracking and guiding your runs is the device between your ears.
- You probably got injured from doing too much, too soon.
- The magic workout, shoe, or superfood is whichever one you’ve been ignoring lately or have never tried.
- You can probably run better; start by running more
- You’re capable of more than you think, but it will take time to get there.
